MEKA.com sells for $12,000 Ebay - An increase in unrealistic prices?
Dec 28

Ebay is an excellent place to pick up very cheap four letter domains at below reseller prices if you look in the right place. What you must be wary of is the abundance of absolute garbage on there! Here are a few things to look out for whilst ‘browsing the shelves’:

1. Numbers! Since the LLLL.com buyout there seems to be more and more people registering four character domains and disguising them as four letter domains. Be on the look out for these fakes and check that the ‘O’ or ‘I’ in that premium name you are thinking of bidding on aren’t the numbers ’0′ (zero) or ‘1′ (one).

2. Characters! Although this one is a lot more obvious its still relevant. Just as in the case of domain owners listing domains with numbers they are also listing domains with a hyphen (-) as four letter domains. Don’t be fooled! They are not four letter domains. These are classed as four character domains.

3. Dates! A lot of sellers don’t state the expiration date of the domains they are selling. Always do a quick whois lookup on the domain and make sure you are aware of when the domain will expire. That cheap anti premium may look inviting at only $20 but you might get stumped with a renewal fee you weren’t banking on a week later!

4. Registrar! Double check the registrar because it may not be a registrar you have an account with. I try and stick to the four registrars I am familiar with. Occasionally it means I miss out on the odd deal but if I have too many domains spread over too many registrars it gets confusing! Also, it may be a registrar that charges an extortionate fee to transfer out a domain or one that has a bad reputation. Take this into consideration before bidding.

5. And finally as with any Ebay auction, double check that the item title matches the item description. I have seen a few auctions lately that have a good domain in the title and a lesser quality domain in the description. Needless to say, this sort of thing could be sorted out by Ebay and you money refunded after the sale but save yourself the hassle and always double check!

If you look out for all of these things in the future, I’m certain you will find some excellent LLLL.com deals to be had on Ebay!
